Parishioners of St. Joseph Catholic Church waited 25 years for a new church. Their dream became a reality thanks to Bishop Joe Vásquez’s Austin Eastern Ring Project. In June, Bishop Vásquez blessed the land at 10104 Hill Lane. The new church sits beside Manor High School. In January, parishioners buried St. Benedict medals at each foundation corner of St. Joseph Catholic Church. This tradition protects against evil and promotes good health. Construction is now well underway. The growth in southeastern Travis County created a demand for more church space. Three parishes, including St. Joseph Catholic Church, serve a large number of Catholics. They have 1,400 seats for approximately 52,000 Catholics. Bishop Vásquez committed $10 million to help these parishes build. The diocese’s contribution is for the church structures. Each parish is responsible for the liturgical furnishings. All three churches used the same basic design. This helped minimize costs. Father Henry Cuellar Jr., administrator of St. Joseph Catholic Church, shared the plans for the campus. The future includes a parish hall and modular buildings for religious education and a rectory. The city of Manor is also working to improve Hill Lane. This will improve access to the new St. Joseph Catholic Church. The history of St. Joseph Catholic Church goes back to 1876. A mission known as St. Mary served the area. Oblate priests built a church named St. Joseph in 1916. The first chapel was destroyed by a storm. The community quickly rebuilt. The current church building was constructed in 1986. Parishioners always intended this to be a temporary location. They have been fundraising for a new church ever since. They will use the money raised for furniture and other items for St. Joseph Catholic Church. Their goal is to also include stained glass windows. Through various fundraising efforts, they have made significant progress. The dedication of the parishioners is evident in their fundraising success, especially during challenging times.
