Have you ever imagined a church rising from humble beginnings? Saint John’s United Church of Christ in Chicago embodies such a story. It is a testament to faith and community.

Between 1868 and 1875, a wave of German immigrants arrived near Chicago. They settled in Jefferson Township. Many became truck farmers. They found a ready market for their goods in Chicago. Lutheran churches were scarce. The nearest one was in Niles.

Chicago had only St. Paul’s Church. Soon after, First St. John’s and First Bethlehem were established. In 1890, Saint John’s congregation grew. An addition increased seating to 800. The first pipe organ was installed. Two new school rooms were added on the ground floor. Dedication took place on September 14, 1890.

In June 1903, twenty-six families peacefully left to form St. Paul’s Church on Canfield Ave. By 1908, Saint John’s expanded its property. They bought lots between the church and the old parsonage. A wooden parsonage replaced the old one in 1911. The parish school was erected in 1915. It included four classrooms, a basement playroom, and a heating plant.

After years of planning, construction of a beautiful church edifice began in 1929. It was completed in 1930. Made of colored Indiana limestone, its beauty has endured. A graceful tower stands with a cross on top. Artistic stone tracery completes the design. The interior is bright. It features art windows, decorated trusses, and a paneled ceiling. The altar, pulpit, and lectern are artistically carved. The old bell from the old church continues to call the neighborhood. It served for fifty-four years.

In 1957, an addition was made to the school. Older parts were updated. In 1980, the Blanke Center was added. This created a Christian Educational Complex. In 2000, at its 125th anniversary, Saint John’s celebrated a major renovation. A new pipe organ, custom-built by Berghaus, was installed.

Today, Saint John’s has over 700 members. They enjoy fellowship opportunities. These include Sunday coffee hour, church clubs, dinners, picnics, and athletic events. Saint John’s is a place for learning and faith for all ages. It offers Bible Study, Sunday School, and a Christian elementary school program. The story of Saint John’s United Church of Christ reflects faith, community, and enduring beauty.
