Saint Johns Southgate holds a rich history, dating back to 1861 when the congregation was first established in Melbourne. The original St Johns Church, built in 1927, stood proudly off City Road until 1989 when it was demolished to make way for the Southgate development. But the spirit of St Johns lived on. This beautiful church we see today, designed by architect David Cole, was dedicated in 1992. It’s a place of worship, yes, but also a cultural hub. Saint Johns Southgate boasts a vibrant musical tradition and frequently hosts concerts. In fact, it houses a magnificent organ in the Baroque style, perfect for the music of the great Lutheran composer, Bach.
