In 1866, a seed of faith was planted. Right here, where Saint John the Baptist, Greenhill stands, the burgeoning village of Greenhill yearned for its own spiritual haven. Before that, the venerable St. Mary’s Church on the hill served the entire town of Harrow. But Greenhill, with its growing population of 400 souls, needed a church closer to home. And so, Saint John the Baptist, Greenhill, was born. The church quickly became a cornerstone of the community. However, as the years passed and the village of Greenhill grew, the original structure proved too small. By 1902, the population had swelled to nearly 5,000, and Saint John the Baptist, Greenhill, underwent a significant transformation. Architects John. S. Alder and Martin Travers were brought in to redesign and expand the building. The church we see today is the result of their vision, completed in stages between 1904 and 1938. While much has changed, the church’s tower, a curious structure nicknamed “the candle snuffer”, still stands as a testament to the original 1866 building. Look closely, and you can almost imagine the village gathering here, seeking solace and inspiration within its walls.
