A whispered legend speaks of a sacred place a haven for pilgrims centuries ago. This is Saint John of Jerusalem.

Standing before you is Saint John of Jerusalem a site steeped in history. It wasn’t always a church. It began in 1140 as a Commandery. This was a community of brothers and sisters. They managed the Order of St John’s vast lands in England. Their primary church was constructed around the same time. The Order of St John of Jerusalem was a powerful force a blend of religious devotion military prowess and healing. From its humble beginnings as a hospice in Jerusalem in around 1070 it grew into a significant religious and military order. Hospitallers or Knights Hospitallers these brothers and sisters cared for the sick. They also defended Christians threatened by the world around them.

The Order’s journey wasn’t without upheaval. Driven from Jerusalem in 1187 its headquarters moved across continents. It found homes in Palestine Cyprus and then Rhodes. Eventually Malta became their sovereign home. In Malta the Knights maintained a renowned hospital. It featured separate wards for infectious diseases and maternity care. The great ward itself was the longest room in 18th century Europe. This demonstrates the scale of their medical work and the immense scope of their care. The Order’s influence reached far beyond the battlefield and hospital walls. They managed extensive landholdings across Western Europe. Smaller communities in Britain supported the main Order. These were called Commanderies.

King Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries in 1540 impacted the Order. The Clerkenwell Priory and the English Order were suppressed. Their lands were seized by the Crown. While the Order in England faced this disruption the Knights sought refuge in Malta. A royal charter in 1888 revived the Order in England. It was a separate institution yet inspired by the original Order’s commitment to caring for people. Today’s St John Ambulance is a testament to that enduring commitment.

The gatehouse before you St John’s Gate is a tangible link to that rich past. It’s a survivor of time’s relentless march. It has witnessed the Order’s rise and fall its relocation to Malta and its eventual rebirth in England. Today Saint John of Jerusalem continues its legacy. It stands as a reminder of a powerful order of faith healing and defense. Its story is far from over. It lives on in acts of service and care. The spirit of the Hospitallers endures.
