Saint John Fisher Catholic Church stands as a silent testament to a courageous bishop. A man who defied a king. John Fisher born in Yorkshire in 1469 rose to become Bishop of Rochester. He was a renowned scholar and a respected educator. He championed traditional Catholic teachings. He even tutored Prince Henry who would later become King Henry VIII.
Their relationship however soured. Henry VIII sought to divorce Catherine of Aragon. Fisher staunchly defended Catherine. He believed in the indissolubility of marriage. He even declared he would die for this belief echoing the sacrifice of John the Baptist. This act infuriated Henry.
The king’s determination to divorce led to a complete break with Rome. Henry declared himself the Supreme Head of the Church of England. Fisher refused to acknowledge this. He refused to take the oath. This act of defiance led to his arrest and imprisonment in the Tower of London.
Imprisonment did not break Fisher’s spirit. While in the Tower a new Pope Paul III elevated him to Cardinal. This only enraged Henry further. Henry declared he would send Fisher’s head to Rome. Fisher was tried for treason. He was found guilty and beheaded on June 22 1535.
His death became a symbol of unwavering faith. His head was displayed on London Bridge. The lifelike appearance of his head drew great attention. It was later thrown into the Thames. Saint John Fisher’s body found a resting place beside Sir Thomas More in the church of St Peter ad Vincula. They share a feast day June 22. Saint John Fisher’s legacy lives on.
