Consider this: 1500 Catholic families sought a spiritual home. That was the impetus behind the larger Saint James Roman Catholic Church. It stands before you today.

Saint James Roman Catholic Church is more than bricks and mortar. It is a testament to faith. It is a monument to community.

In 1957, Father Morris saw the need. He began preparations for a larger church. Sadly, he passed away before his work was complete. Father Hill served as administrator for a few months. Then, Father O’Gorman was appointed pastor. He continued the preparations. The priests moved into a house on Vincent Street. Demolition of the old buildings commenced. During construction, the hall became a temporary chapel. The new Saint James Roman Catholic Church and rectory were completed in 1961. The church was dedicated on June 18, 1961.

Step inside Saint James Roman Catholic Church. Note the stained glass windows. Father O’Gorman envisioned all the designs. Three windows stand out. The Transfiguration. The Calling of the Apostles to be Fishers of Men. Christ Raising the Daughter of Jairus from the dead. They are massive. They are compelling works of art. Along the sides of the church, above the Stations of the Cross, are the Ten Commandments. They are also depicted in stained glass.

In 1977, Father Gerald Walker began thirteen years of leadership at Saint James Roman Catholic Church. That same year, the bimonthly newsletter began again. It had been discontinued.

Father Tim Nichols became pastor of Saint James Roman Catholic Church in 1990. During his twelve years, he brought many changes. A parish-wide census was conducted. It required many hours of manpower. The result was a registered parish population of 3000 families. The establishment of a pastoral committee enhanced communication. It bridged the gap between the church leadership and the parish family.

The church saw improvements. A new electronic organ replaced the previous one. A new sound system was installed. The choir area was improved. A new concert piano and staggered choir seating were added. In addition, all the pews were refurbished. The parish offices were moved. They were taken out of the rectory and moved to the former convent across the street. The convent was renovated. Finally, the hall was redecorated. The kitchen was updated. The modernized kitchen became the focus of an effort to feed the homeless. Currently, volunteers provide lunches every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

In 2002, Father Nichols was reassigned. Father Jim Kavanagh was appointed pastor of Saint James Roman Catholic Church. He was assisted by Associate Pastors Father Joe Kammerer and Father Brendan Kearney. Deacons Richard Shinkle and Bob Miller also assisted.

In 2011, Monsignor Michael Meyers joined the parish as pastor. Father Jim Kavanagh retired and resides at Saint James Roman Catholic Church. Many new ministries are starting. They are changing lives. They are helping the parish grow spiritually. Parish improvements include a new canopy entry project and upgrades to the doors. These sparkling glass doors and repairs to the St. James Statue improve safety. They demonstrate a commitment to providing a welcoming environment.

Saint James Roman Catholic Church purchased property across Vincent Street. This property includes buildings formerly used as churches and offices. It includes a never-completed remodel for an education building. These will be used to allow expansion. Expansion of current and future ministries. It will provide much-needed room for the youth and confirmation ministry. This expansion has been ordained by God. The church is open to His spirit. It continues to honor Him. It deepens faith.
