Has anyone ever noticed how a building can whisper stories? Saint James Cathedral, right here on Ninth Avenue, has been whispering its stories to Seattle since 1907. It’s the mother church of the Archdiocese of Seattle, a beacon of faith and, frankly, a survivor. Bishop Edward O’Dea spearheaded this grand project, envisioning a majestic cathedral to anchor the growing city. He wanted to move the diocese from Vancouver, Washington to Seattle. Saint James Cathedral was part of his vision for Seattle. O’Dea chose the New York firm Heins & LaFarge, architects renowned for their work on the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. Their design for Saint James Cathedral was a bold departure, a Renaissance Revival masterpiece inspired by Italian cathedrals. Imagine two soaring 167-foot spires reaching for the sky, framing a grand entrance. A magnificent dome crowned the cathedral, completing the breathtaking silhouette. But Saint James Cathedral’s story isn’t just about grandeur. It’s about resilience. In 1916, a heavy snowfall tested the cathedral’s strength. The dome, unable to bear the weight, collapsed. It was a devastating blow, but the people of Seattle rallied. The cathedral was rebuilt, though the dome was never replaced. The collapse, however, led to the installation of stunning stained-glass windows by Charles Connick. They are among the largest collections of early Connick windows in America. Step inside Saint James Cathedral, and you’ll find even more stories etched in its art and architecture. The bronze doors, added in 1999, depict humanity’s pilgrimage to the heavenly Jerusalem. A 15th-century altarpiece by Neri di Bicci graces the chapel, a quiet space for reflection and prayer. Saint James Cathedral isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of Seattle, a place where faith and resilience intertwine.
