High atop a bluff, overlooking the Calumet Sag Channel, stands Saint James at Sag Bridge Catholic Church. Can you feel the weight of history beneath your feet? This isn’t just any church. It’s the oldest working Roman Catholic Church in Northern Illinois. Saint James at Sag Bridge has witnessed centuries of change, from the footsteps of Native Americans to the arrival of Irish immigrants who built the nearby canal. Established in 1833, the church initially served those hardworking canal workers in a simple log cabin. Imagine their dedication, dragging limestone up this steep hill to construct the magnificent structure we see today. The church, completed in 1858, was built on an ancient Native American trail, now known as Archer Avenue. Long before the church stood here, this spot served as a vantage point for Native Americans and later, a French fort. In fact, Father Jacques Marquette is believed to have conducted Catholic Mass right here in 1673. That makes this site one of the oldest locations of Catholic Mass in the Midwest. Saint James at Sag Bridge isn’t just a church, it’s a testament to the enduring power of faith and community. It stands as a beacon, connecting the past to the present. This sole country parish of the Archdiocese of Chicago continues to serve a vibrant community. They gather within the unique and beautiful surroundings, keeping the spirit of St. James alive.
