In 1921, a small group of just twelve families, from a mix of faiths, laid the foundation for what would become Saint Ignatius Catholic Church in St Heliers. Their vision took shape as a modest wooden church, designed to hold a congregation of 100 souls. It was named after the patron saint of Father Doyle, the Parish Priest of Remuera. Saint Ignatius Catholic Church officially opened its doors on March 12, 1922, with a ceremony led by Bishop James Liston. Priests from Remuera would make the weekly journey to St Heliers to conduct mass. The church served the growing community for over half a century. Then in 1978, the original wooden structure gave way to a modern building. This new Saint Ignatius Catholic Church was designed by parishioner and architect, Mr. J. Hackshaw, reflecting the architectural trends of the era. Adding a unique artistic touch, the renowned New Zealand artist Colin McCahon designed and crafted the colored glass windows that grace the altar and entrance. Today, Saint Ignatius Catholic Church continues to evolve alongside the ever-changing landscape of Auckland. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of its founders, offering a place of worship and community for parishioners in St Heliers. A Sunday mass takes place at 9:00 am, welcoming those seeking spiritual solace and connection.
