Saint Hugh Catholic Church in Lyons Illinois. A cornerstone of the community for nearly a century. Its red brick stood strong against the Illinois weather. Its doors opened to countless parishioners. Generations made their First Communions here. Said their marriage vows. Many found solace and comfort within its walls.
For 97 years Saint Hugh served as a spiritual center. A place of worship for the Roman Catholic community. The church school thrived for many years. Families gathered here for celebrations. And mourned here too in times of sorrow. But times changed. In 2001 the school closed. Families moved on. The church’s congregation dwindled.
In June 2021 the Archdiocese of Chicago announced a merger. Saint Hugh would join two other parishes. A bittersweet farewell picnic was held. Longtime parishioners shared memories and tears. They mourned the closing of their beloved church. They looked forward to the future. Hoping the building would continue to serve as a house of God.
The property was put on the market. The price was initially set at $12 million. But eventually sold for around $800000. Saint Nikola Serbian Orthodox Church purchased it. Their congregation was excited for their bigger space. It gave them room for growth. They planned to renovate. They planned to establish a school.
The stained-glass windows remained untouched. Beautiful and beloved by all who entered Saint Hugh. They served as a reminder of the church’s rich history. A history that spans generations. A history of faith community and shared experiences. Saint Hugh continues its legacy. Now as a house of worship for the Serbian Orthodox community. Its doors continue to welcome all who seek solace. A new chapter begins. A new community finds a home. A testament to the enduring power of faith.
