Have you ever heard of a church that experienced a pepper riot? Saint Hedwig Roman Catholic Church in Chicago is no ordinary house of worship. Its story is filled with faith, controversy, and a bit of spice, literally.

The church, a grand Polish Cathedral, dedicated to St. Hedwig, was built in 1901. This beautiful church is known for its Renaissance style architecture, echoing the glory days of the Polish Commonwealth. Before it proudly stood on Hoyne Avenue, it was established in 1888 by the Resurrectionist Order, who also ran St. Stanislaus Kostka, Chicago’s first Polish parish.

But things weren’t always smooth sailing. The Resurrectionists’ dominance led to conflict, culminating in the infamous “Pepper Riots”. Imagine a crowd of 3,000 protesters storming the foyer, assaulting the priests within. The protesters’ rage reached its peak when they threw red pepper into the officers’ eyes, causing chaos and injury. This uprising ultimately led to a schism, with the disgruntled protesters forming their own church: All Saints Cathedral of the Polish National Catholic Church.

Despite the turbulent history, St. Hedwig endured, still administered by the Resurrectionists, with its doors open to diverse communities – Polish, Latino and Filipino. Today, masses are celebrated in English, Polish, and Spanish, reflecting the changing demographics of the neighborhood. St. Hedwig’s faith community embraces its rich heritage and continues to welcome all with open arms.
