Stepping back in time to 1888, we find ourselves amidst a growing Polish community in Chicago. They longed for a spiritual home, a place to celebrate their faith and heritage. This led to the founding of St. Hedwig’s Church by the Resurrectionist Order. St. Hedwig’s Church, a beacon of hope and faith, quickly became a cornerstone of the community. However, the path to its creation wasn’t without its challenges. Tensions arose in the 1890s between parishioners and the Resurrectionists. This culminated in the infamous “Pepper Riots.” Imagine a crowd of 3,000 protesters storming the church foyer, clashing with priests. Police intervened, only to be met with red pepper flung into their eyes. Shots rang out, dozens were injured, and the conflict left a lasting mark on the church’s history. Despite this turbulent beginning, St. Hedwig’s persevered. Completed in 1901 for $160,000, the church’s stunning Renaissance style, designed by Adolphus Druiding, stands as a testament to the community’s resilience. The same architect also designed St. John Cantius Church, another Chicago landmark. Picture the grandeur of the Polish Cathedral style, its intricate details recalling the golden age of the Polish Commonwealth. Inside, the church walls came alive with captivating paintings by Thaddeus von Zukotynski and later works by John A. Mallin. Imported Bavarian stained-glass windows cast a kaleidoscope of colors, adding to the church’s ethereal beauty. St. Hedwig’s witnessed more than just community gatherings. In 1977, a future Pope, Karol Wojtyła, then Bishop of Cracow, graced its halls with his presence. Years later, tragedy struck twice. In 1965, thieves stole from donation boxes and set a fire that ravaged the sacristy and a side altar. Then, in 2008, a basement fire scorched a hole beneath the altar, destroying the cherished statue of Our Lady of Manaoag. Through trials and triumphs, St. Hedwig’s remained a spiritual anchor. The church adapted to the changing demographics of Bucktown, embracing a diverse congregation of Latino and Filipino worshippers. Masses are now celebrated in English, Polish, and Spanish, reflecting the rich tapestry of cultures that call St. Hedwig’s home. In 2021, St. Hedwig’s and St. John Berchmans Church merged to form the Blessed Carlo Acutis Parish. This union marked a new chapter in St. Hedwig’s story, ensuring its legacy of faith and community continues to flourish.
