“Did those palm trees always look so out of place?” a voice whispered beside you. You glance at your neighbor, intrigued by the unexpected question as you both stand before Saint George’s. Saint George’s has seen its share of transformations since its early days in Fitzroy North. This grand Anglican church, a beacon of faith for generations, has witnessed the ebb and flow of life on St. Georges Road. The road itself, a bustling artery connecting the suburbs, has gone through periods of evolution, particularly in the 1990s and early 2000s. Remember those palm trees lining the median? They were a point of contention during the “Preston Reservoir to Merri Creek Water Main Renewal Project.” In 2017, Melbourne Water uprooted those 80 palms, carefully storing them off-site before returning them to their rightful place. A symbol, perhaps, of Saint George’s own steadfast presence amidst change.
