A vibrant melody, grounded in the Black Church tradition, spills from the Saint George and Matthias Episcopal Church. This isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to resilience and unity. The Saint George and Matthias Episcopal Church serves the Pullman and Roseland neighborhoods of Chicago. It stands as a beacon of faith and community. This church has a unique story. It represents the merging of two congregations: St. George and St. Matthias. St. George, a historically Black congregation, faced a devastating fire that destroyed their church building. They initially held services in their rectory, persevering in their faith. Eventually, they found a new home with St. Matthias, an Anglo congregation. Together, they formed the vibrant community of Saint George and Matthias Episcopal Church. Inside these walls, the spirit of the Black Church tradition thrives. The 10 am Sunday Eucharist is a Rite II service. The music incorporates beloved hymnals like “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” the African-American Hymnal, and the Hymnal 1982. The choir, under the direction of a skilled organist and choir director, elevates the worship experience with powerful and participatory music. Beyond the regular Sunday services, Saint George and Matthias embraces its cultural heritage. They host an annual Kwanzaa celebration and honor Black History Month. Their “Taste of St. George and St. Matthias” potluck celebrates the diverse culinary traditions within the congregation. The church also extends its reach into the community through various ministries. The Fr. Charles Pond Memorial Kitchen Ministry, founded by the Rev. Canon Gwendolyn J. Dillon, has served the local community for over 30 years. They provide monthly meals to those in need, nourishing both body and spirit. The church is more than just a place of worship. It’s a place where faith, culture, and community intertwine to create something truly special.
