What started with just a $50 bond? It became Saint Francis of Rome Church. This church stands as a testament to faith. It reflects community spirit in Cicero.

Welcome to Saint Francis of Rome Church. It’s a place where history and devotion intertwine. This isn’t just a building. It’s a landmark filled with stories.

In 1923, a group of determined women saw a need. They called themselves “La Petites”. These women approached Bishop Hoban with a bold idea. They said the West Side needed a church. The Bishop offered them advice. He set them on their mission.

“La Petites” divided the Chicago area into zones. They included Oak Park, Cicero, and Berwyn. Their goal was to raise funds. They wanted to build their church. This church would unite Irish, Czech, German and other worshippers.

On February 2, 1923, parishioners met Rev. John L. Kelly. He was assigned as their Pastor. The first Mass was held at the Clifford Theatre. It was on Roosevelt Road. Ground was broken for the new church in the fall. The church was built in Spanish Mission-style. It was located at Austin Boulevard and 15th Street.

For 90 years, Saint Francis of Rome Church has stood strong. It celebrated its 90th anniversary. Bishop John Manz celebrated a special Mass. This showed the church’s importance. Former and current parishioners gathered. They shared stories. They remembered the ties that bind them to Saint Francis of Rome Church.

Father Mark Bartosic spoke about the parish’s deep roots. He noted the dedication of the people. He said they experienced the Lord’s love here. They were grateful for it.

Even during a blizzard, the faithful gathered to pray. This shows their dedication. Saint Francis of Rome Church is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a spiritual home. It is a symbol of unwavering faith.

Today, Saint Francis of Rome continues to serve its community. It offers Mass in English and Spanish. Confessions are heard in both languages. The church is located at the corner of 15th Street and 59th Court.

In July 2022, Saint Frances of Rome united with St. Mary of Celle. They formed the Parish of St. Mary Frances of the Five Wounds. Saint Frances of Rome is the Parish Church. It stands as the main worship site.

As you stand here, consider the legacy of Saint Francis of Rome. Think about “La Petites” and their $50 bond. Remember the community. They built this sacred space. Feel the spirit of those who found solace here. Let the story of Saint Francis of Rome inspire you. It is a true beacon of faith.
