The scent of freshly cut grass hangs in the air. It’s a surprisingly pleasant aroma given the history held within these walls. Welcome to Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church in Pflugerville.
This unassuming church holds a story of resilience faith and unlikely partnerships. It started not with grand plans or a wealthy benefactor but with humble Mexican tenant farmers. In the 1920s these families toiled in the fields. Sunday Mass in Austin was a long journey. Their dedication to their faith however remained unwavering.
Their solution was both ingenious and heartwarming. They approached their Lutheran employers. The farmers asked for help. Their employers were so moved by their devotion that they offered the use of their Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Every Thursday evening these families gathered for prayer and fellowship.
This wasn’t a permanent fix. The desire for their own church burned strong. Two families in 1928 took a leap of faith. They requested the establishment of a Catholic Church from the Archbishop. The Archbishop agreed. He only had one condition: land. This is where the remarkable generosity of the Lutheran employers repeated itself. The Cantu family again appealed to their employers. They received funds to pay the taxes. The employers wouldn’t even accept repayment. The Cantus donated the land. Their sacrifice laid the foundation for Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church.
On November 17 1931 the feast of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary the church was officially established. The first Mass was celebrated in 1932. The church initially served as a mission. It was linked to Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Austin then Taylor. Finally it was reattached to Austin in 1951.
Growth was inevitable. A small wooden church could no longer serve the expanding community. In 1977 land was purchased. A new church was built. Parishioners worked tirelessly. The men toiled on site. Their wives provided nourishing meals. In April 1979 the first Mass was celebrated. This building serves as Saint Elizabeth’s Chapel today.
Further expansions followed. A church hall was completed in 1985. It too became too small. In 1997 a new sanctuary and religious education building were dedicated. Even more recently in 2015 a new religious education building was added.
The story of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to faith perseverance and the power of unexpected collaborations. It demonstrates how the smallest acts of kindness can have monumental impacts. It shows us how a community’s shared devotion built a strong thriving parish.
