Bishop Edward John O’Dea’s vision. That’s what Saint Edward State Park is all about. Right here before you stands a testament to his dream. In the late 1920s he purchased 366 acres. He donated this land to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Seattle. His gift? The construction of Saint Edward Seminary.

Designed by the renowned Seattle architect John Graham Sr. the seminary opened in 1931. This impressive building served as a vital institution for 45 years. It educated young men for the priesthood. Think of the countless lives shaped within these walls. The stories whispered in the hallways. The dreams forged in the classrooms.

But the seminary’s story didn’t end there. In 1976 enrollment declined. The Archdiocese closed the seminary. Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen intervened. He had a vision for this cherished land. He recognized its inherent beauty. He didn’t want to see it sold off. Instead he worked tirelessly with the state. His goal? To preserve the grounds as a state park.

In 1977 the majority of the land was sold. Saint Edward State Park was born. Enchanted trails beckoned hikers. Lake views captivated visitors. The magnificent fir cedar and maple trees stood tall. They offered shade and solace. The building itself became a beloved symbol. A symbol of this stunning park.

However the building fell into disrepair. Years of neglect took their toll. Then came a public-private partnership. Daniels Real Estate stepped in to save this iconic landmark. A meticulous restoration began. The exterior facade roof and original windows were carefully restored. The interior was transformed. The result? The Lodge at Saint Edward State Park. A luxurious hotel that blends history and modern comfort.

The former dormitory rooms now house 84 guest rooms. Classrooms overlooking the park are now flexible meeting and event spaces. The dining hall is now Cedar + Elm restaurant. The seminary’s social hall is now the Remington Ballroom. Even the former barbershop has been repurposed. Today it’s The Tonsorium Bar.

Saint Edward State Park offers so much more than just a hotel. It’s a place of history nature and reflection. It’s a place where Bishop O’Dea’s vision lives on. It’s a legacy for all to enjoy. Walk these grounds. Breathe in the fresh air. Feel the rich history beneath your feet. Experience the beauty that inspired Archbishop Hunthausen’s dream. This is more than a park. This is a story waiting to be discovered.
