Saint Edmund’s story begins humbly. In 1905 the first services were held far from this very spot. It was then known as The Washington Park Mission. Its location 55th Street and Wabash Avenue was a far cry from its current grandeur.
The following year the name changed to Saint Edmund’s Mission. A move to 55th and State Streets followed. But the burgeoning congregation needed more space. In 1908 they found it at 5831 South Indiana Avenue. This building served as their home for many years.
Father Samuel Joseph Martin played a pivotal role in Saint Edmund’s growth. His ordination as a deacon in 1928 marked the start of a long and dedicated ministry. He became the church’s priest-in-charge in 1929. Under his leadership Saint Edmund’s Mission achieved parish status in 1940. Father Martin’s tenure continued until 1970. He is considered a cornerstone figure in the church’s history.
The church we see today came into being in 1945. Saint Edmund’s acquired its present structure at 6105 South Michigan Avenue. This significant relocation marked a new chapter in the parish’s life. The move to this impressive building symbolized growth and stability.
The 1948 establishment of St Edmund’s Parochial School further solidified its role in the community. This school became a hub of education and faith for generations of children. The Saint Edmund’s Church Credit Union also shows the church’s commitment to community well-being.
Over the decades Saint Edmund’s has seen many dedicated priests serve as its leaders. From Father Richard T Middleton to Father Shawn Evelyn each priest added their unique contribution to the church’s rich legacy. The church’s history is a succession of devoted individuals who helped to shape its identity.
