Saint Demetrios is Seattle’s oldest Greek Orthodox congregation. Its story began long ago with the arrival of Greek settlers in the 1880s. Initially they joined with the Russian community forming the Greco-Russian Church. This early church laid the foundation for what would become Saint Demetrios.
The desire for a church solely dedicated to the Greek Orthodox faith grew stronger. In 1915 over 300 Greek residents met to discuss this important matter. The Greek Community of Seattle was officially incorporated in 1916. They purchased land and constructed their first Saint Demetrios Church.
The original Saint Demetrios Church was a humble building. It served the community for many years. It was built in the Cascade neighborhood. The congregation faced financial difficulties but persevered. This reflects the resilience of the early Greek immigrants. They held bazaars to raise funds.
The church’s growth continued. The 1930s brought economic hardship and internal disagreements but the faith of the community remained strong. They were resilient in facing this difficult period.
By the 1950s the church had outgrown its building. A new location was needed. They sold their first church building. The congregation purchased land in Montlake. They chose architect Paul Thiry. He was a prominent architect of the 1962 World’s Fair.
The new Saint Demetrios Church opened in 1963. Its design is stunning. It features beautiful Byzantine-style mosaics. The building was a triumph of faith and community effort. Richard Haag a renowned landscape architect designed the church grounds.
The Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church continues to thrive. It remains an integral part of the Seattle community. The church’s annual festival is a major event. It draws large crowds. It is a testament to the church’s enduring spirit. The annual festival’s proceeds support numerous charitable causes. Its story continues to be written.
