Saint Clements Episcopal Church started as a mission in December 1890. Reverend George Herbert Watson founded it under Trinity Parish. In 1891, Bishop John Adams Paddock approved its organization as a parish. Eighty lay petitioners gained assent on December 7, 1891. This was on the Feast of St. Ambrose. St. Clement’s Guild also formed that year.
Imagine the early days. The congregation met in homes. Later, they gathered at Calvary Presbyterian Church. From 1894 to 1900, they used the “cold schoolhouse.” The church moved to 24th Ave S. and Fir St. in 1901. In 1947, they found their current home on 32nd Ave. S & Atlantic St.
Not all was smooth sailing. In 1893, St. Clement’s became a mission again. But in 1896, it regained parish status. Reverend George Buzzelle became rector. On Passion Sunday in 1899, the first African American family joined. This was a significant moment. Mrs. Theresa Dixon, her daughter Christine, and son Chester were confirmed.
Saint Clements Episcopal Church championed inclusivity early on. In 1926, the parish sponsored St. Phillip’s Mission. It later became the Church of the Advent. When that church closed in 1958, many African American families came to Saint Clements Episcopal Church. In 2011, a special service marked 75 years of ministry among African Americans in the Episcopal Diocese of Olympia.
The 1960s and 70s brought social change. Saint Clements Episcopal Church adapted. In 1968, women joined the vestry for the first time. “Operation Front Door” started, offering dances for young people. In 1969, the “Anchor Drop-in Center” opened for neighborhood youth.
Despite community service, challenges arose. Demographic shifts meant Saint Clements Episcopal Church could not support a full-time rector. From 1978 to 1985, a part-time priest led the church. Things improved in 1985 when Saint Clements Episcopal Church sponsored the Maritime Ministry. In 1991, the church celebrated its centennial with a special service.
Saint Clements Episcopal Church has always valued liturgy and music. Peter Hallock became organist in 1992. He had retired from St. Mark’s Cathedral after 40 years. Hallock was a respected composer and Canon of Honor.
