Tucked away on the banks of the Rhône, the Saint-Clair chapel whispers tales of a bygone era. This unassuming corner of Lyon, once vibrant with life and faith, now holds only echoes of its rich past. The Saint-Clair chapel, attested as early as the 13th century, served as a vital part of the Saint-Pierre Abbey. It evolved over time, becoming a place of solace and healing. Known as a recluserie, a place for religious seclusion, it drew people seeking cures for ailments, particularly those related to sight. The Saint-Clair chapel even held a famous recluse, Jeanne de la Boisse, in 1258. Its influence stretched beyond its walls, lending its name to the surrounding district, the Saint-Clair district, and even a nearby gate and bastion. The chapel saw rebuilding in 1656, then transformation into an almshouse during the 18th century. Sadly, this sanctuary met its demise during the tumultuous French Revolution. Despite its physical disappearance, the spirit of Saint-Clair lived on. Its name continued to grace bridges, quays, and even a new chapel built in Caluire-et-Cuire. This new chapel, erected twenty years after the revolution, marked a continuation of faith and a tribute to the original Saint-Clair. Even today, the name Saint-Clair resonates in the Lyon area, a testament to a humble chapel’s lasting impact. Its memory continues to shape the identity of the surrounding area.
