Saint-Chéron wasn’t always known by this name. The town has seen names like Saint Chéron Montcouronne and Saint-Chéron Baville come and go. The name Saint-Chéron though, is believed to be tied to a Roman named Caronus, a man of prestigious upbringing who, after converting to Christianity, embarked on a journey to Gaul. Traveling through Marseille, Caronus, whose name later evolved into Chéron, diligently preached the Christian faith. Legend has it that his efforts were tragically cut short. While on his way to Chartres, Chéron was ambushed and killed by bandits. His death, a poignant echo of the persecution faced by early Christians, resonated deeply within the region. While some historians debate the historical accuracy of Chéron’s story, his influence on Saint-Chéron remains undeniable.
