Born in 1828 Youssef Antoun Makhlouf a humble Lebanese boy would become Saint Charbel. Saint Charbel Church in Beirut stands as a testament to his enduring legacy. This magnificent structure is a place of profound spiritual significance for Maronite Catholics. It serves as a beacon of faith and a living tribute to a man revered for his piety.

Saint Charbel’s life was marked by deep devotion and asceticism. He joined the Lebanese Maronite Order in 1851. He later became a priest living a life of severe penance. His dedication to prayer and spiritual discipline was extraordinary. Even some Muslims recognized his holiness.

In 1875 he was granted permission to live as a hermit. He spent the next 23 years in solitude at the Hermitage of Saints Peter and Paul. He lived a life of rigorous self-denial. He focused completely on his union with God. He died on Christmas Eve 1898.

After his death Saint Charbel’s tomb became a site of pilgrimage. Countless miracles are attributed to his intercession. His body was remarkably well-preserved after his death. The incorruptibility and flexibility of his body after exhumation astonished experts and doctors. Numerous healings and other miraculous events are associated with Saint Charbel. These events cemented his reputation as a miracle worker.

The Church recognized his extraordinary life. He was beatified in 1965 and canonized in 1977 by Pope Paul VI. Pope Paul VI praised Saint Charbel as an example of monastic sanctity. He is considered a new eminent member of monastic sanctity. Saint Charbel’s devotion to poverty penance and asceticism continues to inspire. He is a powerful symbol of faith and hope.
