“Family-friendly, evangelical congregation” is how St Catherine’s Argyle describes itself. But there’s so much more to discover about this welcoming place. St Catherine’s Argyle has a fascinating history. It reflects the changing face of Edinburgh’s religious communities.

The story of St Catherine’s Argyle begins in 1861. Members of the Free Church sought a new place of worship. They first met in a hall. Then they gathered in Clare Hall. Services even took place in a house. These early gatherings laid the foundation for a permanent church.

In 1866, Chalmers Memorial Church opened its doors. The building could seat 900 people. Horatius Bonar, a famous hymn writer, served as its first minister. Imagine the beautiful hymns that once filled this space.

The church’s name evolved over time. In 1900, it became Grange U.P. Church. By 1929, it was known as St. Catherine’s in Grange. The name “St Catherine’s” has medieval origins. It is derived from a local nunnery of St Catherine of Sienna. Over time, “Sienna” transformed into “Sciennes”.

A significant change occurred in 1968. St Catherine’s united with Argyle Place Church. Argyle Place Church had been founded in 1880. It was the result of disagreements over communion wine. The initial plan was for Argyle Place to be the main worship space. St Catherine’s would become the halls.

Tragedy struck in 1974. A devastating fire destroyed Argyle Place Church. This led to a change of plans. St Catherine’s building was refurbished. It became St Catherine’s Argyle Church in 1979.

The building itself has interesting features. It is made of grey stone. Pink granite pillars add a touch of color. A proposed steeple was never completed. The interior has been modernized over the years. The most recent updates took place in the late 1960s. This was when the union with Argyle Place was completed.

Rev. Victor Laidlaw served the congregation for 33 years. He retired in April 2008. He fondly recalled the community spirit of the Grange area. The current minister is Rev. Stuart Irvin.

Today, St Catherine’s Argyle remains a vibrant church. It actively welcomes students. It has strong links with Edinburgh University. The church provides a nurturing environment. People can deepen their faith here. They can also grow in their discipleship. The congregation engages in various activities. These include music, children’s work, and outreach to international students.

St Catherine’s Argyle is more than just a building. It’s a living testament to faith. It is a community. It is a place where people connect with each other.
