Saint Bernard’s Catholic Church wasn’t merely a place of worship. It was the birthplace of a much-needed hospital. Father Murray understood the profound needs of his parishioners. He recognized the lack of adequate healthcare in the thriving Englewood neighborhood. His vision extended far beyond the church walls.
His search for a partner organization led him across the border to the Religious Hospitallers of St. Joseph in Kingston Ontario Canada. Seven courageous Canadian sisters answered his call. They arrived on November 21 1903. Immediately they began working tirelessly. They made linens bedding and bandages. They also went door-to-door raising funds for the hospital. Their dedication mirrored the unwavering faith of the community.
Their collective efforts were remarkable. They managed to purchase land at Harvard Avenue and 64th Street. This land became the home of St. Bernard Hospital for 115 years. On June 26 1904 the original main building was dedicated. It was named in honor of the patron saint of its founder St. Bernard. The hospital’s first baby a boy arrived on Christmas Day. He was fittingly named Noel.
