Saint Benedict Parish began humbly in 1906. Mass was initially held in a rented hall. Can you imagine? A simple beginning for what would become this magnificent structure. The first church building was made of wood. It was quite modest.
By the 1920s the church expanded. The Fathers remodeled classrooms. This allowed the Sisters of St Dominic to live comfortably across the street. A new school was dedicated in 1925. This cost a whopping $144000. A fortune during the Great Depression.
The original wooden church deteriorated. Mass moved to the school auditorium in 1934. It remained there until the current church was built. The modern church was dedicated in October 1955. Archbishop Thomas A Connolly presided.
The rectory built that same year became the original church office. The construction of this new church represents an incredible achievement. Parishioners raised nearly four hundred thousand dollars. That’s dedication. That’s community. Their unwavering faith is truly inspiring.
In 1958 the need for more convent space was pressing. Parishioners once again rose to the challenge. They pledged $163000 for a new convent. Archbishop Connolly dedicated it on July 11 1959. It demonstrates the unwavering spirit of Saint Benedict.
Look closer at that rose window. It’s stunning. It honors the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. They served Saint Benedict Parish. The window symbolizes the cycle of life. The ruby cross represents the four Gospels. The inscription reads “To Preach The Gospel To The Poor He Hath Sent Me”. Notice the eight roses signifying the Beatitudes. The four Evangelists are near the edge. The blue and silver bands are the Water of Life. The lances symbolize the instruments of Christ’s crucifixion. The nails are at the base. The crown of thorns encircles the entire window. It’s a powerful symbol of faith hope and sacrifice.
