The imposing brick facade of Saint Barbara Roman Catholic Church stands before you. It’s a testament to faith and the unwavering spirit of Polish immigrants.

Saint Barbara Roman Catholic Church is more than just a building. It’s a living monument to a community’s devotion. This magnificent church in Chicago’s Bridgeport neighborhood holds a special place in the city’s history. It was founded in 1909. The goal was to alleviate overcrowding at St Mary of Perpetual Help Church.

The church’s construction was a true family affair. Reverend Anthony Nawrocki served as its first pastor. He was the brother of St Mary’s pastor Stanislaus Nawrocki. The dedication of Saint Barbara Church took place in 1914. The impressive Renaissance-style edifice was designed by Worthmann and Steinbach. They were renowned for building many of Chicago’s stunning Polish Cathedrals. This church is unique. It boasts an octagonal design. A rare feature among houses of worship in the archdiocese.

Imagine stepping inside. You’d be greeted by the breathtaking beauty of 25 stained-glass windows. These vibrant windows depict scenes from the Gospels. They also showcase the lives of various saints. These windows alone are worth a visit. They are a masterclass in artistry and craftsmanship.

But Saint Barbara’s story extends beyond its stunning architecture. In 2019 the Archdiocese initiated the ‘Renew My Church’ program. This resulted in a merger with St Therese Chinese Catholic School. This merger saw St Therese assuming control of St Barbara’s school campus. The rectory and administration were also transferred. This merger is a significant part of Saint Barbara’s ongoing story. A story of adaptation and resilience within the ever-changing landscape of Chicago.

Today Saint Barbara Church stands as a beacon of faith. It continues to serve its community. This architectural gem is a reminder of the enduring spirit of the Polish immigrants who built it. It’s a place where history and faith beautifully intertwine. Let the grandeur of Saint Barbara Roman Catholic Church inspire you. It’s a church truly worthy of your time and contemplation.
