High above the bustling streets of Marseille stands the church of Saint-Antoine. Its aged stones bear witness to centuries of history. Saint-Antoine wasn’t always a quiet residential area.

Centuries ago Antonine monks settled here near the Notre-Dame des Baumes chapel. That chapel is now known as Notre-Dame-Limite. The monks’ presence gave the area its name Saint-Antoine. The church dedicated to Saint Anthony the Great remains a testament to their legacy.

Historically Saint-Antoine held a strategic position. It was the main exit from Marseille. The old Route Nationale 8 to Aix and the Route Nationale 113 to Salon met here. The A7 motorway bypassed Saint-Antoine in 1951. Still the area remains a busy thoroughfare.

Saint-Antoine is a diverse neighbourhood. It comprises distinct entities. There is the traditional village center on the Plan d’Aou. The church sits apart separated by the Aygalades stream’s valley. There’s also a hilly area near the Tuves valley on the Etoile massif’s slope. These sections don’t connect easily.

Famous Marseille rappers hail from Saint-Antoine’s Plan d’Aou. Soprano Alonzo and members of Psy 4 de la rime grew up here. Even Jul a well-known singer frequently mentions the area in his music.

The Saint-Antoine train station on the Marseille to Aix-en-Provence line was closed for a time. It reopened in 2009 as a TER station. Bus line B2 serves the area linking it to the metro. Line 89 connects Saint-Antoine to Pennes-Mirabeau. Other less significant lines connect it to neighbouring districts.

The Saint-Antoine church stands proudly. It is a silent observer of Marseille’s vibrant past and present. It is a vital part of this unique and historic district. The church embodies the spirit of Saint-Antoine. It is a symbol of faith resilience and the enduring charm of this northern Marseille neighbourhood.
