Recall a time when sand dunes stretched where we now stand. This is the story of Saint Anne of the Sunset Catholic Church. It stands as a testament to faith and community in San Francisco’s Inner Sunset.

Founded in 1904, Saint Anne’s parish mirrored the growth of the Sunset neighborhood. Back then it was known as the “Outside Lands.” The original church was a modest wood-frame building built in 1905. It accommodated about 450 people. Disaster struck in 1906. The earthquake toppled the small church.

The resilient parish rebuilt and expanded. Soon a new larger church was needed. Construction began in 1930. Three years later, Archbishop John J. Mitty dedicated the completed Saint Anne of the Sunset Catholic Church.

Notice the Romanesque-revival architecture. The massive dome and uneven twin towers define the skyline. Admire the great rose windows. Take in the frieze sculpture adorning the facade. Sister Justina Niemierski from Mission San Jose created the sculpture. It depicts salvation history.

Saint Anne School opened in 1920. It continues to serve neighborhood children. For over 100 years the Saint Anne School has been an integral part of the church community. The school started with 222 students. At one point there were 950 girls attending the school.

The church has always been a vibrant and faith-inspired school and community. Tom White, the principal of St. Anne School, had attended the school himself.

Saint Anne of the Sunset celebrates its diverse community. Besides English, Mass is offered in Arabic and Cantonese. This reflects the parish’s diverse congregation.

In 1974 the church was painted a beautiful pink color. This was after taking almost 65 years to pay off the construction debts.

Parishioners honor their patron saint every year. They hold a novena with a procession around the neighborhood. It starts in the vestibule of Saint Anne of the Sunset Catholic Church.

Saint Anne of the Sunset stands as a beacon. It shines for the Inner Sunset. It represents faith, resilience, and community. Its history echoes through the Sunset District. The church’s doors are open to all.
