In 1858, a seed of faith was planted in North Minneapolis. This seed would eventually blossom into St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. Reverend David B. Knickerbacker, rector of Gethsemane Parish, saw a need. He began holding services in a simple schoolhouse. This was the humble beginning of St. Andrew’s. A church building was later constructed on Washington and Seventh Avenue North. It was consecrated by Bishop Whipple in 1870. St. Andrew’s continued to grow under Reverend Knickerbacker’s guidance until 1875. Then the church officially became St. Andrew’s. A vestry was elected, and the parish joined the Convention on September 28, 1875. St. Andrew’s wasn’t just a place of worship. It played a key role in serving the diverse community of North Minneapolis. The church aimed to provide a spiritual home for various groups. These included native-born Americans, Scottish, Irish, and German immigrants. The original chapel served the congregation until 1895. A new church was built on 12th Avenue North and Sixth Street. The congregation, like others on the Near North Side, moved further north in 1905. Their new location was 12th Avenue and Sixth Street North. Five years later, they moved again to 19th Street and James. This location was tragically destroyed by fire in 1924. Despite this setback, the spirit of St. Andrew’s lived on. Today, St. Andrew’s continues its mission of sharing the love of Jesus Christ. It serves the North Minneapolis community and surrounding areas. It’s a testament to the enduring power of faith and community.
