Imagine, standing amidst the towering structures of Chicago, you stumble upon a modest church adorned with a towering steeple. This is Saint Albert the Great Catholic Church. It’s not the grandest or most elaborate church in the city, but it holds a unique charm.

Saint Albert the Great Catholic Church is more than just a place of worship; it’s a testament to the resilience of the community. It was founded in 1949 by a group of dedicated parishioners who wished to assemble a place of prayer in their evolving neighborhood. The earliest masses were held in a converted schoolhouse, a far cry from the church that stands today.

The congregation’s fervour was unwavering, and they tirelessly worked to build their very own chapel, often toiling under the night’s light. It was truly a labor of love. On Christmas Eve, 1949, just three months after the groundbreaking ceremony, Mass was held for the first time. The building wasn’t complete; in fact, the floor was still unfinished, raw clay peeking through from below. But, the community’s spirit outshone the rudimentary surroundings, and the church was filled to the brim.

The following year, the church was officially dedicated, the boundaries of the parish stretching from Cicero Avenue to the west, encompassing nearly 450 families. In the years that followed, St. Albert’s grew as a parish, catering to the growing community with the establishment of a parish school, a convent, and even a choir. The church was expanded several times to accommodate the swelling congregation.

The parish school opened its doors in 1953 and was quickly brimming with students. Sister Eileen Patrick, the first principal of the school, laid the groundwork for a vibrant educational institution. Sister Eileen and her fellow sisters, Sister Albert Therese and Sister Patrick Ann, served as dedicated educators.

The church boasts a contemporary design symbolizing the hill where Christ was crucified, with steps leading to a freestanding altar. The stained glass windows bathe the space in a soft, inspiring light, highlighting the church’s reverence.

Today, Saint Albert the Great continues to stand as a symbol of faith, community, and perseverance. The church’s history is one of humble beginnings, tireless efforts, and unwavering faith, a truly inspiring story for everyone to witness. It’s not just a church; it’s a community’s legacy, a piece of Chicago’s history, and a haven for those seeking solace and spiritual guidance.
