“Bound to Christ” was the bold declaration of Saint Agnes. Today we stand before Saint Agnes Missionary Baptist Church. It is a place echoing faith and community.

Saint Agnes of Rome inspires this church’s name. Agnes was a young girl. She lived in the 4th century. She chose her faith over earthly desires. Her story is one of steadfastness and devotion.

Agnes faced persecution for her Christian beliefs. Suitors sought her hand. They were drawn to her beauty and noble status. She refused them all. She claimed to be devoted to Christ. This unwavering commitment led to her martyrdom.

Tradition says Agnes was only 12 or 13 when she died. Her story emphasizes her youth. It also highlights her virginity and faith. These virtues made her a symbol of purity and strength.

Agnes’s devotion resonates through the ages. Even today the Catholic Church celebrates her feast day every January 21. She has been honored by the Church for more than 1700 years.

The stories of Saint Agnes are varied. We know the place of her burial. We also know her approximate age. Much less is known about her life. There are many stories passed down since her martyrdom.

Today Saint Agnes’ skull resides in a side chapel. It is in the church Sant’Agnese in Agone in Piazza Navona Rome. Her body was buried in what is now known as the catacomb of St. Agnes. Her bones are still preserved in the Church of St. Agnes Outside the Walls. It was built over the catacomb.

Saint Agnes’ name has dual meanings. In Greek it means “chaste.” In Latin it means “lamb.” Both meanings foreshadowed her death. She was a virgin martyr. She died defending her chastity. She refused to give up her faith.

Legend tells of miracles surrounding her death. Sent to a brothel her hair grew to cover her body protecting her. Flames refused to burn her. Ultimately she was beheaded.

Saint Agnes is the patron saint of girls. She is also the patron saint of chastity and virgins. She is even the patron saint of victims of rape. Her strength in the face of adversity continues to inspire.

Two lambs are blessed on her feast day. The lambs are then shorn. The wool makes palliums. These are liturgical vestments worn by archbishops.

Saint Agnes Missionary Baptist Church echoes this legacy. It is a beacon of faith. It is a testament to unwavering commitment. It stands as a reminder of the young martyr. Her devotion to Christ continues to inspire. The church’s story is intertwined with her sacrifice. It is a call to stand firm in one’s beliefs.
