The Saint Agathas Roman Catholic Church stands tall on West Douglas Boulevard, a beacon of faith in the North Lawndale neighborhood. It was founded in 1893 to serve Irish families. Today, it is a mostly African American parish, serving families in the area bounded by the Baltimore and Ohio railroad tracks. The church was built on the corner of Douglas Boulevard and Kedzie Avenue. The congregation grew in the 1920s and 1930s, with the convent being enlarged and the school renovated. The neighborhood changed in the later decades, becoming predominantly African American. The existing church built in 1906 was torn down due to upkeep and a new church was erected in 1982. Saint Agatha’s has been a part of the community for over a century, serving as a place of worship, support, and a symbol of resilience in the face of changing times. It remains a vital part of the fabric of North Lawndale, a testament to faith and community spirit.
