Journey back to 1625. Imagine the bustling streets of Kasımpasa as the Sahaf Muhittin Cami takes shape. This mosque, also known as the Karamanlı Cami or Kara İmam Mescidi, was initially built thanks to the generosity of a philanthropist named Sahaf Muhiddin. Sahaf Muhittin Cami stands as a testament to his vision. The mosque’s original construction details are lost to time, as no inscription remains. Yet, the very stones whisper tales of its early days. Over the years, time took its toll. The Sahaf Muhittin Cami fell into disrepair. But its story doesn’t end there. Kaptan-ı Derya Kaymak Mustafa Pasha, son-in-law of Grand Vizier Nevşehirli Damat Ibrahim Pasha, stepped in. He revived the mosque’s waqf and even commissioned a beautiful minber, adding to the mosque’s growing legacy. The mosque itself is a modest structure, covering 252 square meters. It’s constructed from brick and features a single dome and a slender, single-balconied minaret, also made of brick. Inside, the prayer hall is simple yet elegant. A marble mihrab and a wooden minber, both adorned with matching decorative motifs, stand as focal points. Within the mosque’s grounds, the original benefactor, Sahaf Muhiddin, rests. In more recent times, a women’s gallery has been added, further evolving the Sahaf Muhittin Cami’s form and function. The Sahaf Muhittin Cami may be a modest structure, but its story is rich. It speaks to the enduring spirit of faith, generosity, and the power of preservation in the heart of Istanbul.
