From the heart of Eyüpsultan rises Şah Habun Camii. This mosque, nestled along Silahtar Ağa Street, whispers tales of a rich past. Şah Habun Camii wasn’t always a place of prayer. It was once part of the Sünbüli tekke, a Sufi lodge. In 1533, Şah Sultan, daughter of Yavuz Sultan Selim, commissioned the renowned architect Mimar Sinan to transform this space. The result is the beautiful Şah Habun Camii we see today. Within its walls rests Şeyh Merkezâde Ahmet Efendi, a prominent figure in the Sufi tradition. The mosque’s architecture reflects a blend of simplicity and elegance. Its rectangular layout, stone and brick walls, and wooden portico create a tranquil atmosphere. Light filters through the upper windows, illuminating the prayer hall. A single door leads into the main prayer area, where a raised platform, or mahfil, faces the qibla. The mosque’s construction features two layers of brick alternating with a layer of cut stone. The mihrab, a niche indicating the direction of Mecca, is adorned with stalactites. A simple wooden minbar stands nearby. Şah Habun Camii has witnessed history unfold, including a devastating earthquake in 1766. It was subsequently restored during the reign of Sultan Mustafa III and later repaired by Sultan Mahmud II. Further renovations in 1953 and 1971 ensured its preservation. One significant change during these renovations was the removal of a two-story front section, replaced by the present-day wooden supports. A visit to Şah Habun Camii offers more than just architectural appreciation. It’s a journey into the heart of Istanbul’s spiritual heritage.
