Right now we stand before the Sagrado Corazón de Cristo Rey. It is a testament to faith and history in Mexico City. Have you felt its pull?

The story of the Sagrado Corazón de Cristo Rey is deeply entwined with Mexico’s religious and cultural identity. Devotion to Cristo Rey and the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús is very popular. It has shaped Mexico’s Catholic identity since the Spanish conquest in 1521. The blending of races birthed a mestizo culture.

In 1914, Mexico was consecrated to the Sagrado Corazón de Cristo. The country had fewer than 20 million people then. Ninety-eight percent declared themselves Catholic. This act had profound roots. It connects to the Cristero War. The war unleashed religious persecution by Plutarco Elías Calles’ government from 1924 to 1928. It left about 250,000 dead. Many died for their love of Cristo Rey.

This consecration occurred during the Mexican Revolution. Archbishop José María Mora del Río offered it at the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús image. He prayed for Mexico’s peace. Many present shouted, “Viva Cristo Rey”. The revolution caused destruction and delayed socio-cultural progress.

Even with 98% of the population Catholic, religious persecution persisted. Still, Mexico renewed its consecration in 1924. It happened during the Eucharistic Congress. Faith in Christ was firmly rooted in the hearts of Mexican Catholics. They showed devotion to the Sagrado Corazón and Cristo Rey.

In 2006, the Episcopado Mexicano renewed the consecration to Cristo Rey. This happened during the visit of Santa Margarita María Alacoque’s relics. She was an advocate of the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús. The original consecration was on October 11, 1924. It took place during the Primer Congreso Eucarístico Nacional. The bishops were in the Catedral Metropolitana de México City. This was when religious persecution began.

The monument to Cristo Rey marks the geographical center of Mexico. It stands atop the Cerro de Cubilete mountain. The original statue was destroyed during the Mexican Revolution. The colossal monument was rebuilt in 1950. The monument is 20 meters tall.

The Sagrado Corazón de Cristo Rey symbolizes faith. It also represents the struggles of a nation. It shows the enduring devotion of its people. It is a beacon for those seeking solace. It reminds us of Mexico’s deep-rooted Christian identity. Remember the echoes of “Viva Cristo Rey”. They carry through generations. They remind everyone of faith and freedom. This place is more than a monument. It embodies the heart of Mexico.
