A humble chapel it started. The Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Santa Mesa Manila. This wasn’t some grand cathedral. It was a small space where a Jesuit priest celebrated Mass. He administered baptisms too. This was in 1903. Archbishop Jeremiah Harty of Manila gave the license.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish wasn’t always what you see today. It grew from modest beginnings. A simple chapel became a thriving parish. Formally erected on February 11 1911 it was entrusted to the Franciscan Capuchins. They cared for it. They nurtured the community’s faith.

The parish has a school. The Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic School. It started with elementary education in 1947. Secondary education was added in 2003-2004. The school continues to serve the community. It educates the children of Santa Mesa.

The devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is strong in Santa Mesa. People from all walks of life find solace here. Students workers and residents alike seek comfort. They find it in the serene image of the Sacred Heart. The sculptor of this image remains unknown. Its serene face is iconic. It reflects the love of Jesus for all. It’s a depiction based on the visions of St Margaret Mary Alacoque. Our Lord Jesus stands presenting His Sacred Heart. His left hand blesses the beholder. He wears a white robe and a red tunic.

The parish’s administration transferred to the Archdiocese of Manila in 1995. Msgr Mario D Enriquez became the parish priest. The devotion to the Sacred Heart continues to this day.
