The Sacred Heart of Jesus Sta. Mesa Parish Church has a rich history. It officially became a parish on February 11 1911. Before that it began as a humble chapel in 1903. For fifty years Franciscan Capuchin Friars led the parish. In 1955 the Archdiocese of Manila took over its administration.
In the Philippines devotion to the Sacred Heart is strong. Many Filipino Catholic homes prominently display images of the Sacred Heart. These images are made from various materials. Almost every church and chapel has an altar dedicated to Him.
Devotion to the Sacred Heart includes observing First Friday traditions. Parishes are often dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. These practices have been part of Filipino Catholic life since the Spanish period.
The image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is quite distinct. It is often depicted as a flaming heart. Divine light emanates from it. A lance wound pierces the heart. Thorns encircle it. A cross surmounts it and it bleeds. Sometimes the image appears within Christ’s bosom. His wounded hands point to the heart.
The wounds and thorns symbolize Jesus’ death. The fire signifies the transformative power of divine love. This image comes from St. Margaret Mary Alacoque’s visions. Jesus showed her His Sacred Heart and expressed His sorrow. He said that instead of gratitude He received ingratitude from humankind.
The devotion to the Sacred Heart came to the Philippines in 1856. The Jesuit Order introduced it. The Church of San Ignacio in Intramuros became a key center. Here people practiced Friday devotions to the Sacred Heart. Manuel Flores carved the first local image of the Sacred Heart. It was placed in San Ignacio Church. Numerous miracles were attributed to it.
Sadly the Church of San Ignacio was destroyed during the Liberation of Manila in the 1940s. The revered image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was also lost. Jose Rizal carved an image of the Sacred Heart during his student days. Before his execution he venerated the image again. Today the image resides in the Archives of Ateneo de Manila University.
In 1872 the Apostleship of Prayer further spread the devotion. It had been founded in France. Its purpose was to unite daily actions with the Heart of Jesus. They aimed to spread the Kingdom for the salvation of souls. Ateneo de Manila Sta. Isabel College and Colegio de la Concordia were the first centers. The association expanded across the Philippines.
Today the Sacred Heart of Jesus Sta. Mesa Parish Church continues to be a beacon of faith. It is a place where people can connect with God’s love. It offers solace and spiritual nourishment. The Parish Fiesta occurs every June 19. This is a day of celebration.
