The story of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish begins humbly. It started as a small chapel in 1903. A Jesuit priest celebrated Mass there. He also administered baptisms with the approval of Msgr Jeremiah Harty.

In 1911, the Parish of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was formally established. The Franciscan Capuchins were entrusted with its care. They dedicated themselves to serving the growing community.

Fr Marcelino de Solt accepted the responsibility on March 18, 1911. Priests from the Franciscan Capuchin Order built the first church. They repaired and renovated it as needed. They also breathed new life into the parish. Religious groups were organized. Lay leaders were trained to work with the priests. Together, they met the needs of the people of Santa Mesa.

The image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is central to this parish. It is presented in its standard iconography. This is based on the visions of St Margaret Mary Alacoque. Jesus stands presenting His Sacred Heart. His left hand is raised in blessing. He wears a white robe and a red tunic. The face of the image is serene. Its sculptor remains unknown.

On March 31, 1995, the administration of the parish was given to the Archdiocese of Manila. Msgr Mario D Enriquez became the Parish Priest. This marked a new chapter in the parish’s history.

The parish is in a busy district. Santa Mesa became a haven for people. Many were emigrants seeking opportunities in the capital. The Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish became the center of their devotion.
