Established on September 1 2006 the Sacred Heart Knanaya Catholic Parish stands as a beacon of faith. It’s a testament to the unwavering spirit of the Knanaya community. This church in Chicago holds a special place in history. It is the first Knanaya Catholic parish outside India. It’s also the first in the United States.

The Sacred Heart Knanaya Catholic Parish wasn’t built overnight. Knanaya Catholics began migrating to Chicago in the 1950s and 60s. They sought better opportunities. They came from the Syro-Malabar Catholic Archeparchy of Kottayam in India. Initially they organized as an association. They longed for their own church. They desired to practice their faith in their own way.

In 1981 they reached out to their bishop in Kottayam. They sought help to bring Knanaya priests to Chicago. This request was eventually directed to the Archbishop of Chicago. Under the Latin diocese a Knanaya Catholic Mission began. Services were held at various locations. A priest from Kottayam was appointed. Masses were held whenever a priest was available.

Then came a significant turning point. Pope John Paul II established the St Thomas Syro-Malabar Catholic Diocese of Chicago in 2001. This diocese changed everything. The Knanaya Catholic Mission was now part of this new diocese. Father Abraham Mutholath became the mission’s director. The mission flourished. Religious education programs expanded. The community thrived.

The long-held dream of a dedicated church finally came true. In 2006 St James Church in Maywood was purchased. Holy Mass was celebrated for the first time in the new building. The mission was officially elevated to Sacred Heart Knanaya Catholic Parish. Father Mutholath became the first pastor.

The Sacred Heart Knanaya Catholic Parish is more than just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant hub of activity. Koodara yogams prayer groups exist. Ministries cater to all ages. The parish actively promotes Knanaya traditions and fosters a sense of Christian love. The main feast honoring the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a major event that brings the entire community together.

The parish has grown tremendously since its establishment. It serves Knanaya Catholics in Illinois and Indiana. It continues to be a symbol of their heritage and faith. It serves as a testament to their enduring spirit in a new land. It’s a place where faith heritage and community converge.
