Whispers of history cling to these walls. This is Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School. Established in 1885 it started its journey in Fairfax Road. Three or four Sisters of Charity of St Paul ran the school. They also managed their own convent school nearby. The original school building Chantry House was a unique space. The school occupied the ground floor. A chapel resided upstairs. The school expanded after the construction of Sacred Heart Church in 1893. This allowed the school to use the upper floors. Imagine the children’s excitement.

World War II brought a dramatic change. Pupils were evacuated to Wales. Chantry House temporarily became a first-aid post and ambulance station. Sadly a V-2 rocket damaged the building in 1944. Despite this setback the school reopened after the war. The school eventually moved to its current location in St Marks Road in 1963. This building had a previous life. It was St Mark’s School a primary school until 1929. It then became a Church of England secondary school. The top class from Chantry House were the first students at St Mark’s. The Diocese of Westminster acquired both Chantry House and the St Marks Road site in 1963. The Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School stands as a testament to resilience and faith. It’s a place where generations of children have learned and grown. It has witnessed both triumph and tragedy. The school’s rich past continues to shape its present. The building itself whispers stories of faith education and community. It is more than just a school. It’s a living legacy. A vibrant community hub in London.
