Here stands Sacred Heart College. It is more than just a school. It is a place steeped in history and tradition. Sacred Heart College opened on June 21, 1903. The Marist Brothers founded it in Ponsonby. It is the oldest Catholic boys secondary school in Auckland with continuous operation. In 1955, Sacred Heart College moved to its current site in Glen Innes.

Imagine the sounds of students filling these halls for over a century. Think of the Marist Brothers. They have been a constant presence. They teach. They maintain the grounds. Their dedication shapes the college.

Brother Basil was the first principal in 1903. Many followed him. Until 1993, all headmasters were Marist Brothers. Then, Brendan Schollum became the first lay principal.

Sacred Heart College celebrated its centennial in 2003. They opened a new administration building. A technology block was added. There was also a new Year 7 and 8 Department. In 2005, the college marked 50 years at the Glen Innes site.

Sacred Heart College sits on 22 hectares of land. This provides ample space for learning and activities. The college follows the New Zealand Curriculum. Students in Years 12 to 13 earn the NCEA. This is a main secondary school qualification.

In Year 11, students complete the Sacred Heart Certificate. This replaced the old NCEA Level 1 course. It was implemented in 2024. This change responded to NZQA modifications.

Sport is a big part of life at Sacred Heart College. The college offers many options. Some students compete at a national level. The 1st XV rugby team is the only team never relegated from the 1A grade. The 1st XI football team won the national title in 2018 and 2019. In 2020, the water polo team claimed the North Island Championship at all three levels.

The Sports Institute program supports boys in Years 7 to 10. It offers development in various sports. These include basketball, cricket, football, rugby union, rowing, and water polo.

Sacred Heart College has six houses. They are named after important figures. These figures are in the Catholic and Marist community. They are also important in the school’s history. Basil House honors Brother Basil. Coolahan House recognizes the land donor for the original site. Lenihan House commemorates the Bishop of Auckland. Marcellin House celebrates Marcellin Champagnat. He is the founder of the Marist order. Pompallier House is named after Jean Baptiste Pompallier. He was the first Catholic bishop in New Zealand. Stephen House is for Brother Stephen Coll. He was a well-known teacher.

The boarding hostel houses about 160 to 170 students. They come from all over New Zealand and overseas.

Sacred Heart College has faced controversies. Bullying, discrimination, and drug use have been issues. These challenges have led to changes. The college has focused on creating a stronger and more caring community.

Many notable alumni have walked these halls. They have excelled in public service, the arts, religion, and sports. Their achievements reflect the college’s commitment to excellence.

Sacred Heart College continues to evolve. It embraces its rich history. It adapts to meet the needs of its students. The college remains a pillar of the community.
