Lost in the labyrinthine streets of Chicago did you ever stumble upon Sacramento Square? This unassuming square holds a surprising story. It’s tucked away at a crucial intersection. Humboldt Park’s Sacramento Boulevard meets Garfield Park via Franklin Boulevard. Think of it as a pivotal point in Chicago’s boulevard system.

Originally envisioned by Daniel Burnham as part of his grand West Chicago Park System Sacramento Square’s design has evolved. It’s seen numerous changes over the past century. Industrial traffic once dominated. The area had little green space. Today only one original corner remains. That’s the southwest corner at Whipple Street and Franklin Boulevard’s south service drive. A few pleasant shady trees and shrubs offer a respite.

A significant redesign occurred in 1909. This was when the Park District acquired Sacramento Boulevard. This acquisition stretched from south of the C & NW rail embankment to Roosevelt Road. The intention was to create another vital connection in the boulevard system to Douglas Park. It’s a far cry from that vision today. Sacramento Square is now a less-than-ideal boulevard. It primarily serves as a busy four-lane expressway. Pedestrians and cyclists are largely neglected. There are decrepit sidewalks and dangerous speeds.

Despite the challenges Sacramento Square endures it represents a piece of Chicago’s past. It showcases a vision for urban planning. A vision that struggles to survive against the pressures of modern transportation. It’s a quiet corner that holds a story of ambition compromises and enduring resilience. The next time you wander through Chicago take a moment to reflect on the history embedded within this small urban square. You might be surprised by what you discover.
