Music fills the air. The Sächsisches Landesgymnasium für Musik Carl Maria von Weber stands before us, a testament to the power of melody and the dedication of young musicians. Imagine the halls echoing with the sounds of aspiring virtuosos, practicing scales, rehearsing concertos. This isn’t just a school; it’s a crucible where raw talent is forged into artistry. The Sächsisches Landesgymnasium für Musik Carl Maria von Weber was established in 1965, originally as a special school for music associated with the Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber. One of four such institutions in the former GDR, it provided specialized training for musically gifted students. The school initially occupied the Villa Rothermundt, a beautiful neo-renaissance style building constructed between 1896 and 1897. Initially, students entered in the eighth grade, similar to other polytechnic high schools of the time. This changed over the years, with entry moving to seventh grade in 1966 and sixth grade in 1975. Students would complete their middle school education here, sometimes progressing to Erweiterte Oberschule (extended high school). A significant moment in the school’s history came on January 9, 1989, with a visit from the legendary violinist Sir Yehudi Menuhin. Menuhin later became the school’s patron from 1997 until his passing in 1999. The renowned conductor Colin Davis then assumed this role. The Sächsisches Landesgymnasium für Musik Carl Maria von Weber continues its strong ties with the Musikhochschule even after German reunification. Professors and lecturers from the university, many of whom are musicians from the prestigious Sächsische Staatskapelle and Philharmonie, provide the instrumental instruction. Since 2004, the school expanded its offerings. It now accepts students from fifth grade onwards and includes instruments like recorder and guitar, alongside jazz music. Students here not only work towards the Saxon Zentralabitur (university entrance qualification) but also undertake a musical final exam based on the entrance criteria for music universities. The Sächsisches Landesgymnasium für Musik is a Ganztagsschule (all-day school) providing 75 boarding places for students from outside Dresden in two new buildings within the park of the Villa Rothermundt. The main academic building, also designed by Karl Emil Scherz, is located on Kretschmerstraße. It was extensively renovated and expanded between 2007 and 2010. As you stand before the Sächsisches Landesgymnasium für Musik Carl Maria von Weber, imagine the countless hours of practice, the soaring melodies, and the dreams taking flight within its walls. It’s a place where the future of music is nurtured, where young musicians hone their craft, preparing to share their gifts with the world.
