The Islamic Cultural Center of Greater Chicago has an interesting history. It is located about 25 miles north of downtown Chicago, in Northbrook. It started in 1906. Bosnian Muslim immigrants formed the Bosnian American Cultural Association in Chicago.

The association’s name changed later. It became the Islamic Cultural Center. This reflected the increasing diversity of its members. In 1954, the group bought a building at 1800 N. Halsted St.

In the 1960s, a decision was made. The decision was to build a mosque and school in Northbrook. A groundbreaking ceremony occurred on September 8, 1974. The lot spanned two acres. On March 21, 1976, the first phase of the new Center opened. It included administrative offices and a library. Weekend school classes, a nursery, and a social hall were also added.

A groundbreaking for the second phase took place on June 29, 1984. Construction finished in 1988. This phase added a prayer hall. It accommodates 500 worshipers. A 200-seat lecture hall and a minaret were also added.

The Islamic Cultural Center was the first mosque in the Chicago area. It was constructed with traditional elements. These elements include a dome and minaret. Illinois architect Aziz Tokh built it. It is a long, low brick-faced building. It features a multi-story prayer hall. The dome sits over the prayer hall. The minaret flanks the front entrance.

Imam Kamil Avdich, a Bosnian native, became the center’s first Imam. He served until his death in December 1979. Imam Avdich worked to maintain harmony. He fostered unity among all Muslims. He did this regardless of their ethnic backgrounds. Imam Dr. Mustafa Cerić also served there. He later became the Grand Mufti of Bosnia Herzegovina. Imam Cerić emphasized teaching Arabic.

The Center serves Muslims of diverse backgrounds. They reside all over the Chicago area. Most members have Bosnian and Montenegrin origins. Members of Arab, Pakistani, Indian, and Turkish origin are also important. The Center has a board. It consists of members of Bosnian and Arab origins.

For Muslims, the Mosque has a special spiritual function. It is a place for spiritual renewal. It provides a sense of sanctity, calmness, and inner peace.
