“Defenedor de la Mercanc\u00eda” reads the inscription. This is a fragment of a character’s thought as merchants sought divine protection. Let me tell you the story of Sa Llotja. This isn’t just a building. It is a symbol of Palma’s rich maritime past. Sa Llotja stands proudly as one of the masterpieces of Gothic architecture in Mallorca.

Sa Llotja was designed by Guillem Sagrera. Construction spanned from 1426 to 1452. It served as the headquarters for the College of Merchants. It was a place to govern the island’s trade activities. The merchants needed a place to meet. King Martin granted them permission in 1409 to form their own college. This was thanks to the work of Bartolomé Grau. The king even allowed them to acquire land for their headquarters.

Imagine the bustling activity within these walls. Merchants haggling over goods from distant lands. Sa Llotja became a hub for naval commerce. It was much cheaper to move goods by sea. It only cost about 2% compared to 15-20% for land transport. The building of Sa Llotja shows the rise of the merchant class.

Guillem Sagrera was more than just an architect. He was also a sculptor. His artistic vision is evident in the building’s details. Look at the statues of the Virgin and Child. See Saint John and the gargoyles adorning the facade. Don’t miss the guardian angel watching over the merchants. The angel holds a banner. It reads “defenedor de la Mercanc\u00eda” protector of merchandise.

The main entrance faces east. Statues of angels stand guard at each door. They each have their own tabernacle. The city’s arms and shield flank them. At the corners, you’ll find more sculptures. Saint Nicholas watches over Portopí. Saint John the Baptist faces the opposite corner. Saint Catherine looks towards the Atrazana. Saint Clara faces the Almudayna.

Inside Sa Llotja, four naves rise to the same height. Six helical columns divide the space. These columns resemble palm trees. They inspired similar designs elsewhere. You can see them in Valencia, Villena and Naples. The vault ribs merge directly into the walls. The vault’s keystones bear the arms of Aragon. The sides show the shield of Mallorca. The original colors and gold still shine. Light streams through large windows on the sides. Small doors at each corner lead to spiral staircases. These stairs ascend to the terrace.

Sa Llotja’s interior once served as the island’s government seat in the 15th century. Today, Sa Llotja hosts cultural events and art exhibitions. Its walls have witnessed centuries of change. It is a reminder of Mallorca’s trading power.

Sa Llotja is more than just a monument. It is a living testament to Mallorca’s past. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty. Remember the merchants who once filled this space. Sa Llotja remains a symbol of Palma’s maritime heritage. It is a protected site of cultural interest. Its code is RI-51-0000409. As you leave, consider the stories held within these stones. They echo through time.
