“Five thousand two hundred and eleven souls” I began my story. “That’s how many people called sa Indioteria home in 2022. Imagine that many stories woven into the fabric of this place”. Sa Indioteria a neighbourhood in Palma de Mallorca. It’s more than just streets and houses. It’s a living testament to centuries of history. Its name itself a mystery. Did it derive from turkey farming? Or was it a resting place for turkey traders? Nobody knows for sure.

Sa Indioteria started as small farms and estates. By the 18th century small settlements had appeared. Then came the church of Sant Josep del Terme a beautiful neo-Gothic structure. This became a focal point of the community finished in 1899. It became the vicarage in 1907 and finally a parish in 1935. The growth of Palma transformed this area. A large industrial and service area was built in the Son Castelló area. Land was developed creating residential areas for working-class families.

The early inhabitants were mainly small landowners. They worked their own land. They grew crops both dry-farmed and irrigated. They also had livestock. But surprisingly despite the name it wasn’t focused on turkeys. The name sa Indioteria meaning “the turkey place” isn’t fully understood. It appeared in documents as early as 1836. The name evolved over time. It became Pla dels Indioters then Pla de la Indioteria and finally sa Indioteria.

Even the church tried to change the name. They wanted to call it Sant Josep instead. This is shown in parish records from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They tried to avoid using the popular name. But sa Indioteria stuck. It’s a name that speaks to the heart of this community. A name that tells a story. A story of resilience adaptation and a strong sense of place. Sa Indioteria is a fascinating place. It has transformed over time. Yet it remains a vibrant and unique neighbourhood. A true gem of Palma de Mallorca.
