“Jam packed,” someone sighs looking at the traffic. It’s a common sentiment regarding the S20 Outer Ring Expressway. This vital expressway includes the S20 Youyi River Bridge. It is a crucial part of Shanghai’s transportation network.
The S20 Outer Ring Expressway is officially designated as such. It encircles Shanghai’s inner districts. Think of it as a giant loop around the city. It helps traffic flow more smoothly.
Originally, sections of the S20 had direction-based names. The eastern part was once called Huandong Avenue No. 1. The western section was Huanxi Avenue No. 1. These names reflected their location on the ring.
The S20 expressway crosses the Huangpu River twice. The Xupu Bridge carries it at the southern end. The Outer Ring Tunnel handles the northern crossing. This double crossing is essential for connecting different parts of Shanghai.
Completed in June 2003, the S20 stretches 99 kilometers. That’s about 62 miles surrounding the city center.
