This unassuming plaque marks a monumental achievement. The S. H. 1 – Auckland Motorway System. It’s more than just concrete and asphalt. It’s a testament to engineering ingenuity and a reflection of Auckland’s rapid growth.
Look closely. This plaque commemorates a network spanning nearly 90 kilometers. Over 90 bridges connect Auckland’s sprawling suburbs. The Auckland Harbour Bridge is just one part of this impressive system. Construction began in the 1950s. Greenlane’s increasingly congested Great South Road was the catalyst. A motorway system became the solution.
The Southern Motorway was the first section built. A motorway causeway followed linking Waterview and Te Atatu. West Auckland was opened up. The Auckland Harbour Bridge’s completion facilitated the Northern Motorway’s construction. The central city connection linked these three motorways. This section’s design benefited from experience gained in other areas. Major connections within Grafton and Newton Gullies were completed in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Extensions followed to the North West Motorway. Further extensions of the Northern and Southern Motorways expanded the network.
Prestressed concrete was used in most bridges. Many central city bridges were built on solid ground. Motorway lanes were excavated below the bridges. The Ministry of Works and Development (MWD) did most of the design. Local consultants designed some structures. Many contractors built the structures. MWD supervised the overall project and earthworks.
The Symonds Street Bridge is particularly fascinating. It’s a main artery into Auckland’s central city. Building a bridge over the motorway was essential but challenging. Alignment had to be precise. Major detours weren’t feasible. A major excavation was necessary. The bridge was built in two sections to maintain traffic flow. This innovative approach allowed for excavation. The bridge piers and foundation piling were completed first. Then limited excavation followed. This bridge was the first in New Zealand to use off-site segmental span construction. Epoxy jointing and prestressing followed. Each segment weighed about 20 tonnes. They were transported placed glued prestressed and connected into a three-span continuous structure.
The Newmarket Viaduct is another remarkable structure. Its elevated design crossed Newmarket. It features long spans an S-shaped geometry and varying superelevation. It was New Zealand’s first prestressed continuous box-girder bridge. It was also the first built without falsework using cantilever techniques. A Freyssinet-type concrete hinge was used at the column bases.
The Newton Gully Interchange’s retaining wall was innovative. It supported the motorway. The Karangahape Road Underpass also aided the motorway’s passage. This wall significantly reduced land and property compensation. The design and construction methods were unusual for 1969-1971.
